Bill Fertig Added to Referee Honor Roll

FertigBill Fertig was honored during the NSSA Hall of Fame Banquet as he was named the 2014 inductee to the Referee Honor Roll.

Fertig has shot over 245,000 registered targets and won a number of state championships during his career, and in 1995, he was inducted into the Florida Skeet Hall of Fame.

He was Referee Champion and a Referee for the World Championships in 1982 and 1983, and a three-time Chief Referee for the Armed Forces Championships. In 1988, he served as Assistant Chief Referee at the World Championships. He was selected to one of the first Retired Military All American Teams when this category was established by NSSA.

In 1980 he became Florida Chief Referee and established a State Shooting Referee program, and his cadre of referees became known as “Fertig’s Fabulous Few.” From 1980 to 2014, he also served as the Zone 4 Chief Referee. He established and personally funded the Florida Referee of the Year recognition program and served as Florida’s Chief Referee until health issues forced him to step down in April 2014, whereupon he was formally recognized as Chief Referee Emeritus by the Florida State Skeet Shooting Association during the 2014 Florida State Championships.

More than merely a referee, he is an accomplished trap mechanic who would often forgo shooting an event and be found repairing a trap so that competition could continue. A talented “shade tree” gunsmith, he might also be found digging into his personal parts junk box to repair a competitor’s gun.

Congratulations, Bill!
